City Beautiful in California

San Francisco is not the only place in California that fell under the influence of the City Beautiful Movement. Although built in the Mission Revival Style, the plan of San Diego’s Panama-California Exposition of 1915 was deeply rooted in City Beautiful ideals.
City Beautiful projects were also suggested for smaller urban centers. Two excellent examples are Willis Polk’s entry allee to the Sunol Water Temple (built in 1910) and Burhnam’s unrealized plan for a new town in coastal San Mateo County called Torquay.
