Fixed in Place: Built-in Furniture

Design: Residence

Built-in furniture or “built-ins” have been in existence since the middle ages, when architectural features such as wall benches were included in interior designs. This type of furniture went through a golden age during the Arts and Crafts movement as a way to streamline rooms and maximize space. For example, in both homes and apartments, Murphy beds were used to convert sleeping quarters to living quarters and cabinetry in the kitchen and dining room replaced the butler’s pantry. Both the 19th and 20th century saw technological advances that impacted the design of living spaces, focusing on convenience and order which resulted in a high concentration of built-in furniture.[1]
