The CED Chair Competition

Fuller Chair

form follows was a furniture design competition open to all CED students hosted by the Environmental Design Archives in February 2016. The idea for the competition came together during an exploration of new ways to engage students with collections in the Archives. Students visited the EDA over several months to view drawings and photographs to serve as starting points for inspiring their chair designs. Design entries were judged by CED faculty Richard Hindle, Galen Cranz, Ronald Rael, and carpenter Paul Mirocha. Designs were judged on four criteria: interpretation of the relationship to the body, the chair’s use-in-context, craft, and feasibility. The top three designs received cash awards and a CED Materials Shop stipend to build their chair to full scale.
