Outdoor Living

Heath, Edith and Brian

The mid-century modern movement emphasized a seamless integration between indoor and outdoor space, particularly in California with its warmer climate. Sliding doors and courtyards led to extending the living room onto an outdoor deck or patio and developing outdoor leisure space, such as a pool or lawn, where children could play. Landscape architects created new types of furniture for these new spaces that could both withstand the weather and compliment the “modern” home.
