Pelican building
Joseph Esherick designed the 1956 Pelican Building for the UC Berkeley student humor magazine. Commissioned by Earle C. Anthony, a long-time client of Bernard Maybeck, Maybeck was originally given the commission but in his nineties he passed the project to Esherick. To express his gratitude for the commission, Esherick incorporated some of Maybeck’s signature design elements into the building, which has been described as a “unique overlap of First and Third Bay Region Traditions.”
