THE
SEASON'S TRIBUTE

See these children sweet and good
Behaving just as children should.
Not theirs to romp and tear their clothes,
Or treat poor Nurse with kicks and blows,
But rather do they always find
Their greatest joy to promptly mind
Their loving parents mild and kind.

For you dear reader I could pray
No richer gift on Christmas Day,
Than that your blessings should include
Children like these both mild and good
Who will not cause you shame or tears,
But brighten your declining years.

Or if perchance I now address
A little child, I would impress
Upon your mind the wholesome thought
That sinful joys are dearly bought.
'Tis virtue's pathway you should tread
From early morn till time for bed.
So shall your good deportment win
The faithful love of friends and kin,
And friends and kin both far and nigh
To you will send, as now do I,
Of Christmas wishes staunch and true
Enough to last the whole year through.
