Landscape Architect Beatrix Jones Farrand (1872-1959) created a center for the study of landscape design at her home in Bar Harbor, Maine. Reef Point Gardens grew demonstration gardens and maintained a library as well as publishing a journal.

Following the demise of Greene & Greene Architects, the famous Pasadena firm he developed with his brother, Charles Sumner Greene (1868-1957) relocated to Carmel where he continued his small practice. 

Trained at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, Albert Lansburgh (1876-1969) became known for his design of theaters, synagogues, and performance venues.

Engineer Walter Steilberg (1887-1974), who specialized in seismic construction, worked in the offices of Julia Morgan and Gardner Dailey.

British landscape architect Gertrude Jekyll included both formal and meandering areas in the overall plan for her garden at Munstead Wood.
