Soon after, he began his California career as an architect in the office of Thomas Church where he designed the lanai for the iconic Donnell Garden in Sonoma. Later he was a co-founding partner of the ROMA Design Group.
William Wurster (1895-1973) had intended to design his own home on Greenwood Common when he purchased the land in 1951. Instead, he built a family retreat at Stinson Beach in Marin County, choosing the 1910 house John Galen Howard had designed for the Gregory family as his primary Berkeley residence.
