Doin' it For Themselves

John Funk (1908-1993) worked with William Wurster. Following Funk’s graduation from UC Berkeley, he became especially impressed by the work of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Funk's national reputation was sealed upon the publication of his 1939 Heckendorf House (Modesto) on the cover of the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition catalog, "Built in the U.S.A., 1932-1944." 

Maggie Baylis (1912-1997) was a graphic artist, hence the charming drawings for “Baylis’ Folly,” the home she shared with her husband, landscape architect Douglas Baylis (1915-1973).

Known as a graphic artist as well as a designer, Ernest Born (1898-1992) also taught design and drawing at U.C. Berkeley’s School of Architecture. His most well known works are the lettering for the BART system and the drawings for the books The Plan of St. Gaul.
