Caffe Espresso (Remodel)

Berkeley, CA 1960

Tasked with designing a café from an already existing interior space, Olsen had the challenge of reworking a narrow floor plan measuring 19’ x 108’ into a welcoming, spacious café. To make space seem larger, Olsen chose light colors for the interior walls and used black and white checker floors adding vitality to the atmosphere of the café. Caffe Espresso no longer exists, but the space is recognized as part of the Berkeley Historical Plaque Project.

The Berkeley Historical Plaque Project was established in 1997 with sponsorship from the City of Berkeley and its Landmarks Preservation Commission, the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association (BAHA) and the Berkeley Historical Society (BHS). For more information: https://berkeleyplaques.org/
