Charles Bedig Snack Restaurant
San Leandro, CA 1962
This project began as part of a Federal renewal program that offered to help develop unused land. Olsen met Charles Bedig when he was sharing an office space with Herman Ruth in the 1950s. Bedig owned and operated a small hamburger joint that was next-door to the office. The city of San Leandro used government funding to develop its waterfront marshlands. Olsen developed the 36' space to fulfill the brief laid out by Bedig, but the site's soil proved to be difficult to work with. The marshland would require deep piles which made the foundations more expensive to build than the restaurant itself.
