Heath Ceramics Factory
By the late 1940s Brian and Edith Heath’s business Heath Ceramics had outgrown its current space in San Francisco, so they worked closely with architects Robert Marquis and Claude Stoller and friend and landscape architect Robert Royston on a new factory that would be located in an industrial area of Sausalito. Edith had very specific design parameters for the factory to ensure that it would be an efficient workspace such as: little to no wasted space, lots of natural light, cross-ventilation, and an outdoor break area for employees which was afforded by the central courtyard designed by Royston. To accommodate Heath’s requirements, the building’s unique roof truss design alleviated the need for posts, which enabled flexible use of the factory floor. Heath Ceramics moved to the new building in 1959 and is still located at 400 Gate 5 Road in Sausalito.
