Hearst Memorial Gymnasium
Completed in 1927, the Hearst Memorial Gymnasium was originally commissioned as part of a grander complex by William Randolph Hearst in memory of his late mother Phoebe Hearst. Bernard Maybeck was originally brought onto the project alone, but his picturesque renderings were not as practical as the University desired, so Hearst recruited Julia Morgan to collaborate with Maybeck on the project. Originally intended to include a gymnasium, museum, sculpture garden and more, financial restraints resulted in only the gymnasium being built.
