Wyntoon
Wyntoon is a 50,000 acre private estate owned by the Hearst family located near Mt. Lassen in rural Siskiyou County, California. Architects Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan designed structures for the property beginning in 1899. The first building on the property, commissioned by Phoebe Hearst, was designed by Bernard Maybeck who hired Julia Morgan to assist with the project. Completed in 1902 the Gothic style castle had six floors of sleeping rooms and a 75-foot central tower constructed of stones. The castle burned in 1929 as the result of an electrical fire.
After the death of his mother, Phoebe, and the fire that destroyed the castle, William Randolph Hearst hired Maybeck and Morgan to collaborate on an even larger castle for the property. The two architects worked to design a Bavarian Gothic-style castle with two great towers, minor turrets, and 61 bedrooms. The project was never realized but a model of the grand castle exists in the Julia Morgan Collection, built by notable model maker Charlotte Mesick.
